Dementia Friends
A Global Movement Making Communities More Dementia-Friendly
The Dementia Friends initiative is a worldwide effort to change the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. First developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United Kingdom, the program has now expanded across the globe — including right here in Virginia.
The Appalachian Memory & Aging Initiative (AMAI) is proud to partner with Dementia Friends Virginia to bring this important program to our region. By joining a Dementia Friends Information Session, you’ll gain a better understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia and how small changes in everyday life can make a big difference for individuals and families.
How to Become a Dementia Friend
Becoming a Dementia Friend is simple, yet powerful:
1. Attend
Attend a Dementia Friends Information Session led by a trained Dementia Friends Champion.
2. Learn
Learn five key messages about dementia and explore what life is like for those impacted.
3. Take Action
Commit to a practical action — big or small — that helps support someone living with dementia in your community.
Every action matters. Whether it’s checking in on a neighbor, offering patience in daily interactions, or raising awareness among your friends, Dementia Friends play a vital role in creating compassionate, dementia-friendly communities.
