Healthy Aging
in Appalachia

We’re expanding access, support, and hope for older adults and families across rural central Appalachia.
The Appalachian Memory & Aging Initiative is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening and expanding a collaborative network of dementia and aging-related services throughout rural central Appalachia. Founded in 2025, we work to connect communities, providers, and families across southwestern Virginia and neighboring states, ensuring that older adults have equitable access to care, support, and education—regardless of where they live or their financial circumstances.
Guided by a vision of dignity, independence, and quality of life for all, we are committed to addressing gaps in care and building a future where aging adults in our region can thrive.

Our Mission

The Appalachian Memory & Aging Initiative is dedicated to strengthening and expanding a collaborative network of dementia and aging-related services across rural central Appalachia. We work to connect communities, providers, and families throughout southwestern Virginia and neighboring states, ensuring that older adults have equitable access to care, support, and education – regardless of geographic or socioeconomic barriers.

Our Vision

We envision a future in which older adults in rural central Appalachia thrive with dignity, supported by a comprehensive, interconnected system of services that promotes brain health, independence, and quality of life. Through regional collaboration and community engagement, we aim to address gaps in care and ensure that aging individuals in our region can access the resources they need to age well.

Guided by Experience.
United by Purpose.

A Collaborative Partnership for Healthy Aging in Appalachia

Rooted in firsthand experience and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by rural communities, AMAI works to build bridges between local resources and regional expertise. We’re strengthening a collaborative network that expands access to care, promotes brain health, and empowers individuals to age with dignity and connection.

Our work extends beyond clinical support — it’s about education, outreach, and community partnerships that ensure no one faces the journey of aging or dementia alone. Together, we’re creating a future where older adults in central Appalachia can thrive with the respect, independence, and quality of life they deserve.
